In a world of ever-growing technology, it’s no surprise that travel apps have become an invaluable resource for those exploring the world.
Travel apps can offer immediate and even urgent assistance with up-to-date information, and cover everything from making a quick booking at a nearby restaurant to putting a shared itinerary together.
Here’s a list of a few apps to aid you…
Hudson’s UK
For heritage sites near you
Hudson’s UK is your guide to historic sites and heritage days out wherever you are in the UK. It’s free to download and the data is fully cached on the phone so you don’t need a signal to use it.
This app is a good one for groups. As well as being able to find a mix of famous palaces and stately homes, ancient castles and gardens from one screen, the user can search for upcoming events, exhibitions, tours and special openings. Clicking on the map will bring up full details of admission times and prices, as well as other useful information.
Tripit
For itinerary organisation
A bit like a pocket travel agent, Tripit pulls together travel information from your confirmation emails for flights, hotels, rental cars, and events bookings and converts it into a single itinerary.
The user can forward their emails to the app and it will do the rest. Tripit allows you to easily share the plans, making this a useful app for coordinating a group trip and ensuring your group members have easy access to the information about where they’re meant to be.
Splittr
For splitting the bill
In an instance where a group bill hasn’t already been paid (be it for a meal, transport or an attraction), Splittr is a handy app geared to splitting costs.
The app provides a simple platform to share costs between friends. You can enter expenses as you go, including who paid what, and the app will do the rest. A nice touch for longer, multi-destination trips is that all currencies are supported and you can mix currencies without having to do the conversion yourself.
Moovit
For live transport updates
Moovit is a free universal public transport app, featuring live arrival and departure times, updated line schedules, local station maps, service alerts and advisories that might affect a trip.
The app uses schedule-based transport information from local public transport agencies and mixes in real-time data about current times and conditions from other riders en route nearby.
Moovit is available in more than 500 cities around the world – including all major cities in the UK including London, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds.
WhatsApp
For easy group communication
WhatsApp Messenger is a mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages for free. GTOs can create a group message, and be able to easily communicate with their group members on one shared conversation screen.
WhatsApp uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, so there is no cost to message and stay in touch with every member of your group at the same time.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages (dependent on what your data allowance is). This app is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia.
