To celebrate World Tourism Day (27th September), we look at some of the interesting activities you can enjoy in a variety of overseas destinations.

From scenic rail journeys through the Swiss countryside to trekking through a sacred valley, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for unique and once-in-a-lifetime experiences at the GLT Show on Thursday 11th October.

1. Sit back on a scenic rail journey through the Alps, Switzerland
Switzerland is a mountainous region with scenery that varies from large lakes, to quaint villages and the snow-caps of the Alps. One of the best ways to take in the country’s scenery is, therefore, on a scenic rail journey. The rail networks offers travellers a panoramic view of glaciers, mountain passes and expansive countryside, all from the comfort of their seat.

2. Explore the picturesque Plitvice Lakes, Croatia
Croatia is four times smaller than England but is home to seven UNESCO world heritage sites. According to Visit Croatia, Plitvice Lake is the country’s most popular tourist site and is a must-see for visitors. With 16 terraced lakes, connected by a series of waterfalls, the National Park is the ideal place for those looking to indulge in a bit of natural serenity.

3. Come face to face with the Big Five, Uganda
Uganda is home to the entire Big Five, as well as an abundance of other mammals, primates and birds. Nepal.

4. Trek the Tsum Valley, Nepal
The Tsum Valley in Nepal is one of the remotest Himalayan Valleys. With the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal and Boudha mountain ranges as its back drop, it’s a picturesque area to visit and is steeped in ancient art, culture and religion, so it offers plenty for groups to explore.

5. Marvel at monuments and museums, Balearic Islands

7. Visit the Flower Island, Portugal
Portugal offers visitors a mix between beaches, towns and countryside but one of the highlights is no doubt Madeira, otherwise known as the flower island. The brightly coloured flora and fauna is a botanical lovers paradise and a walk through the High Plateau will give your group views over the valleys and across to the coast.

8. Go to new heights, Benalmadena

Once at the summit, there are a number of walks that can be enjoyed, or groups can head to the dancing horse exhibition or watch a birds of prey show.
